چکیده

Investigations of precipitation reactions in equilibrium self-assembled structures like vesicles, micelles, microemulsions, etc. is an active area of research, but growing biological systems are not equilibrium systems. Here we propose the use of a well-characterized nonequilibrium system of myelins in AOT/water to carry out precipitation reaction of CaCO3. It is found that the micro-flow patterns generated by myelin growth organize the particles formed into a chain of length of over 300 microns and whose form and structure are responsive to concentration of reactants and stresses in the system. It is suggested that this type of study of reactions in dynamic, structure-forming systems can be used to mimic some aspects of embryonic stage bone growth.

Scaled-Particle Theory and the Length-scales Involved in Hydrophobic Hydration of Aqueous Biomolecular Assemblies

Hydrophobic hydration plays a crucial role in self-assembly processes over multiple length-scales, from the microscopic origins of inert gas solubility in water, to the mesoscopic organization of proteins and surfactant structures, to macroscopic phase separation. Many theoretical studies focus on the molecularly detailed interactions between oil and water, but the extrapolation of molecular-sc...

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load

A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...

Development of a computer simulation system for particle-level molecular interactions

In this poster presentation, we will show our development of a particle-level simulation system targeted for analyses of biochemical reactions. Rate equations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are now widely used in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology. These two simulation techniques have also greatly contributed to application fields such as modeling of pathways and designing...

Combining Bottom-Up Self-Assembly with Top-Down Microfabrication to Create Hierarchical Inverse Opals with High Structural Order.

Colloidal particles can assemble into ordered crystals, creating periodically structured materials at the nanoscale without relying on expensive equipment. The combination of small size and high order leads to strong interaction with visible light, which induces macroscopic, iridescent structural coloration. To increase the complexity and functionality, it is important to control the organizati...

Membrane junctions in the myelin sheath of goldfish lateral nerve.

The myelin sheath of the goldfish lateral line nerve has been studied by means of the freeze-etch technique. Fracture faces of the myelin lamellae reveal linear structural elements which in some respects resemble those of tight junctions. In unfixed myelin rows of particles on the ef face are matched by narrow grooves on the pf face. Fixation with glutaraldehyde produces a partitioning of junct...
